Turkey enjoy a medal haul in Baku 2017
Turkish National Athletics Team enjoyed a successful campaign for the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku with 21-medals haul. Turkey had very good results in fourth edition of Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku while narrowly missing to get top of the overall medal table. The Games's next host - it will be in Istanbul 2021 - secured 71 gold medals at the Games, nine of them came from athletics events. Total of 45 Turkish athletes competed at the Games as they won nine gold, eight silver and four bronze. European silver medallist and Olympic finalist Ramil Guliyev was one of the main figures at Baku National Stadium during the games. Baku-born Guliyev made a superb sprinting-double plus added a silver in 4x100 relay - Turkey missed gold by only 0.01 secs against Bahrain. Former Olympic medallist Eşref Apak, leading hammer thrower of the country, get a gold medal by only 21 centimeters over younger compatriot Ozkan Baltacı. The Games' brightest effort came from Eda Tugsuz, rising star of Turkish athletics. Eda, just 20-year old from Antalya, made a stunning throw 67.21, had an amazing world-lead and European U23 record. She won javelin throw final by more than 18-metres over Iranian rival. 2016 World junior bronze medallist Tugsuz instantly became a hot contender for London 2017 World Champs after her brilliant effort. Kenya-born Turkish medal-machine Yasemin Can added her collection two more in Baku. She just inch-beaten by Bahrain's Ruth Jebet in 5000 metres to taking silver, while she was compansating 10,000 metres victory in final day. Can's training partner Meryem Akdağ also had two medals, one silver in 1500 metres, one bronze in relay. In women's pole vault, there was another notable competition. Demet Parlak and Buse Arıkazan, two leading Turkish pole-vaulters, shared gold medal after exactly same jumping orders. The Turkish glamour girls have first time clearance at 4.15, but missed national record attempts at 4.35 respectively. In the end, Parlak and Arıkazan awarded by gold medals with 'no silver' rule.
